At the centre of the Anglo-Saxon settlement of Wakefield, where Westgate, Northgate and Kirkgate met, stood a small church and a preaching cross. The church was dedicated to All Hallows, and was possibly built on an earlier pagan ritual site. The church of Wakefield was mentioned in the Domesday Book.
